Travelmarketreport on the increasing demand for river cruising:

Interest in small ships and river cruises was especially keen. More than one-quarter, 27%, of agents surveyed saw increased demand for river cruises, while 38% saw an increase in client request for small ship cruises.

A-Rosa and Scenic Cruises target the US Market:

A-ROSA River Cruises, the newest partner for David Morris International, completed its first sailing geared exclusively toward the North American traveler. A-ROSA River Cruises' A-ROSA Stella embarked on its seven-day, round-trip A Toast to Provence & Burgundy culinary itinerary on June 1, 2013. The itinerary sailed to Rhone, Ardeche and Avignon.

The Canadian on the aftermatch of the flooding:

For the most part, river cruise lines appear to be getting mixed reviews by their passengers in taking care of them on the cruises that had to be cancelled or have itineraries moved to buses. It is going to cost those cruise lines that did the right thing millions for offering full refunds, covering airline change fees, and giving discounts on another river cruise. Lines like Viking and Avalon talked earlier this year on how they were mainly sold out for the season so “another river cruise” means finding 2014 cruises for slotting these passengers for cancellations.

Grand Circle Travel rated among top river cruise lines:

Vince Cook, CEO of Grand Circle Cruise Line, today announced that Travel + Leisure readers have rated the fleet as one of the best river cruise lines in the 2013 World's Best Awards survey. Survey results of the 18th annual Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards, which uncover readers' favorite cruise lines, hotels, airlines, cities, islands, tour operators, safari outfitters, car-rental agencies, and more, ranked Grand Circle Cruise Line among the top three in the world. Complete results are featured on the Travel and Leisure website, and in the magazine's August 2013 issue.

Sea Cloud does bicycle tours along the rivers:

River Cloud II will feature two cycling cruises from Passau to Budapest on either 24-31 August or 21-28 September 2013, with the 8 day/7 night Danube voyages taking in the history, art and culture of the ancient Austrian-Hungarian Empire, with the itinerary including visits to wine producing regions, national parks, artistic treasures and ecclesiastical residences.

The Chicago Tribune on river cruises:

River Cruises. Cruising along major rivers has become a really big business, especially in Europe, where dozens of river cruisers ply the Danube, Elbe, Mosel, Rhine, Seine and the river-canal system linking Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as more remote locations. China is emerging as an import destination. Two "stern wheeler" riverboats cruise the Mississippi-Ohio system. The advantage over ocean cruises is that you're always passing through some scenery, much of it spectacular, rather than open ocean.

Tauck and Uniworld rated by Travel + Leisure magazine:

From big to small, the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine have voted for their favorite cruise ships, with points given for cabins, restaurants/food, service, itineraries/destinations, excursions/activities and value. Top river cruise: Tauck, Uniworld Boutique, Grand Circle.

Viking sponsores concerts Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts:

"Viking's commitment to cultural exploration goes beyond our cruise itineraries, and the LA Phil is an ideal partner with one of the nation's finest classical music programs," said Richard Marnell, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Viking Cruises.

River cruises to watch (Europe and beyond):

River cruising may be considered a relaxing holiday choice but behind the scenes there’s frantic activity as riverboat operators ramp up their offerings to keep pace with the demand for holidays on water. Europe remains the big seller, and with more than 20 vessels due to launch on the rivers and canals traversing Germany, France, the Netherlands and Portugal, no other region comes close to stealing its crown.

Coverage of the strike:

Lock workers on strike:

The first strikes block shipping from the German Rhine through all important tributary and connecting waterway canal systems in the northwestern German state of North Rhine-Westphalia which borders the Netherlands and in the southwestern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg which borders with Switzerland, the Alp source of the Rhine.

Strike blocks Barge Traffic:

The strikes, which began in west and south Germany, have spread to other parts of the country, according to Reuters. As of July 9, cargo shipping was restricted or blocked on sections of rivers and canals, including the Rhine-Herne canal, Danube, Main, Ruhr, Danube-Main connection canal, Neckar, Dortmund-Ems canal and Wesel-Datteln canal, the WSA said to a Reuters reporter.
