Eleven Cities Tour in the Netherlands postponed

Though the icy cold has a tight grip on Europe: while the Main and Danube are closed for shipping, for some it is not cold enough. People in the Netherlands are concernd that the Eleven Cities Tour can't take place this year. Actually it couldn't since 1997 and everyone was really looking forward for this event in 2012.

Danube frozen over

German authorities closed the Kachlet and Jochstein locks in the vicinity of Passau due to ice on February 5th 2012. The Main Danube Canal was already closed 2 days earlier, but icebreakers are used on the canal to avoid that massive ice chunks damage bridges or locks. Parts of the Main river are closed for the same reason.

Meta: More content, pictures

Over the last few days a few things were added, so time for a new meta post:

* Interactive Map: Nice houses to indicate the size of a town instead of boring pins
* Country Index: A large european map + national maps for each country
* River Index: Maps and height profiles online
* A few deadlinks repaired and the navigation fixed

Cruise Lines and other useful twitter accounts

Before I started this project, I already had multiple blogs which rest on the web cemetery. But all that time, there was one thing I never really understood: Twitter. Whats the idea behind just posting 140 letters? Btw, you might get an idea that I also prefer to call people instead of using short message service. Just recently I decided to give it a try. What I misunderstood was this: It more versatile and flexible than RSS feeds or signing up for a newsletter.

Accident: Main Blocked / Rhine Ships collided

Quite a busy day.

Main blocked

This morning a cargo ship hit a wall next to an interstate bridge in the vicinity of Wertheim and is now blocking the Main river between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg. Pictures are available here. On some one can identify reporters from a federal tv station, I'll keep you informed and will post the film when it's put online.
